El pasado 1 de setiembre el grupo META Uruguay fue invitado por Rosangela Berman Bieler (UNICEF Nueva York) a reunirnos con ella y algunas personas más, provenientes de diferentes países, dado que se encontraban en Montevideo con motivo de una reunión técnica de UNFPA.
Allí nos encontramos Vladimir Cuk, quién es el Director de la Alianza Internacional de Discapacidad, Abia Kram que es representante del Consejo Mundial de la Juventud de Unicef, así como también representante de Costa Rica.
En estas líneas quiero compartir algunas reflexiones en las que me quedé pensando, sobre todo en relación al grupo que estamos construyendo.
En primer lugar ese día reforcé una vez más en este camino del activismo, la importancia del mismo en los jóvenes con y sin discapacidad, en la lucha por el cumplimiento de los Derechos Humanos y de la Inclusión de las personas con discapacidad. En la misma nunca debemos perder la creatividad y lo novedoso.
La lucha, no es sólo la reivindicación, es la construcción permanente con otros, de estrategias por estar mejor todos, y no solo las personas con discapacidad.
A veces nosotros mismos nos hacemos trampas, exigiendo la inclusión, donde diferentes grupos están luchando por lo mismo, pero de manera separada
De esta manera Vladimir, nos planteó como es necesario poder juntarnos con los diferentes grupos que luchamos por lo mismo, para aunar voces y poder conquistar cada vez más territorios.
Poder abrirnos nosotros mismos es uno de los desafíos más fuerte y lindo que tenemos. Nuestra misión como jóvenes del siglo XXI es deconstruir estereotipos proponer y accionar desde una nueva Naturaleza: lo Inclusivo.
Ser y estar en lugares comunes haciendo explicito lo que falta, desde lo constructivo.
Por otro lado nos trasmitieron su visión en relación a las redes, considerándolas herramientas muy potentes, para comunicarnos, empoderarnos, y exigir el cumplimiento de derechos más allá de las fronteras!
Utilicémoslas para construir- nos. Levantemos desde META lo novedoso y la creatividad!

On September 1st a group of young local leaders from META Uruguay was invited by Rosangela Berman Bieler (UNICEF Senior Advisor on Disability, NYC) to meet with her as well as a selection of guests from various countries who were in Montevideo for a technical meeting with UNFPA (United Nations Populations Fund).
META Uruguay was introduced to Vladimir Cuk, the director of the International Disability Alliance (IDA) and Abia Kram, the Costa Rican representative of UNICEF’s Youth Council.
On these grounds I’d like to share a few reflections which left me thinking, above all in respect to the META group which we are in the process of expanding and improving.
The first META goal which was reinforced by the meeting on September 1st was the importance of the equal and collaborative participation of both youth with and without disabilities. This is essential to an effective campaign for fully achieving the human rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities. And that goal is not possible without inviting creativity and innovation to the movement.
The campaign for inclusive is not only about acceptance and recognition. It is about the permanent possibility of exchange and partnership with others, about strategies for improvement as a collective, not limited only to persons with disability.
At times we trick ourselves into thinking our work is “inclusive”, in the fact that various groups are working toward the same goal. The issue is that those groups are segregated and working independently from one another.
It was in this respect that Vladimir Cuk guided our discussion to the necessity of linking the distinct groups fighting for the same goal in order to combine forces and expand beyond our current boundaries.
To give ourselves the power to be open to new people and alternative possibilities is one of the largest and most enjoyable challenges we face. Our mission as young people in the 21st century is to reject the stereotypes and to both propose and act upon a new, inclusive reality.
We must place ourselves in community spaces and demonstrate, explicitly and in a constructive fashion, what we are still missing in order to achieve a fully inclusive society.
In another respect, the meeting with international leaders presented us with a new vision in relation to networking and the need to access the most potent tools for communication, empowerment, and the demand for human rights regardless of national borders!
Let us apply ourselves to build META to a new altitude. Let us buoy META with creativity and innovation!
